Overview/Description

A working knowledge of the principles and practices of effective labor-management committees helps to maintain effective labor-management relationships.  This course will increase your understanding of the labor-management environment and provide a basic working knowledge of the Civil Service Employees Association (CSEA) and NYS labor-management committee process.  You will be able to discuss your questions with classmates on a discussion board and e-mail your instructors for additional subject matter expertise.   

Target Audience

CSEA Leaders and NYS managers who are currently on, or hope to join, a labor-management committee.

4 hours

Lesson Objectives:

Orientation

·        Describe the organization, operation, and process of labor-management committees (LMCs)

·        Recall and distinguish between tasks that are done before, during, and after an LMC meeting

·        Identify the value of the LMC process and implications of not following the process

Preparation

·        Identify skills needed to be an effective LMC participant

·        Explain and use the agenda development process to identify and research agenda items

Meeting

·        Recognize general techniques of problem solving and communication

·        Explain the commitment a productive member brings to the LMC process

·        Identify the responsibilities of an LMC member

Follow up

·        Describe the communications and monitoring essential to effective meeting follow up
