Technical Issues - Questions and Answers (FAQs)

Important Note:

  • If you are accessing any of the courses from a computer at work, please notify your IT personnel or computer help desk before attempting to download or install any software. Your agency/facility may have strict rules governing the installation of software on computers.

  • We HIGHLY recommend that you run a system compatibility test to ensure that your personal home computer (PC) is properly configured. See SkillSoft Online Customer Support http://browser.skillport.com/bh/default.asp. All you have to do is give them the e-mail address that you put on the online learning application. If your computer doesn't pass, you can access a FREE one-to-one chat (Live Help) with a SkillSoft representative. They will help you to set up your computer to take online courses.

General Technical Issues Answers

How do I download a SkillSoft Course to my computer with a dial-up modem ?

Any SkillSoft Course can be downloaded, however, you may not want to consider downloading unless you have a very slow connection to the internet. Downloading a course can be more work than it's worth. Here are the steps to download a course:

  1. Log into the Partnership's Online Learning Center.
  2. Click on the Add New SkillSoft Course to My Plan link in the Course Selection box.
  3. Search for the course you wish to take in the Search and Learn area at the top of the screen.
  4. Once you've located the course you want, click on the name of the course to open up its details.
  5. Click on the Download This Course button.

Important Note: In order to download a course, you must have the Skillsoft Course Manager software on the computer you want to download to. If you do not have this software loaded (which you most likely won’t), you will be asked if you want to download the Skillsoft Course Manager software. You must answer 'Yes'. After downloading the Course Manager, you need to click on Download This Course again to download the course itself this time.

Periodically (at the very least when you are done using your downloaded course), you will have to connect to online learning using your Internet connection so that the results of your courses can be 'transferred' to the main system.

Why can't I display Skillbriefs, Job Aids or resources?

Your computer may be blocking these helpful reference documents if you have a Pop-up Blocker turned on. See Pop-up Blocker.

I can't see the navigation buttons at the bottom of my screen. What's wrong?

The resolution (or viewing quality) of your computer monitor may not be set properly. See Screen Resolution.

I tried to take my online course in SkillSoft on Sunday, but I couldn't do it. What's wrong?

See Login FAQs for answer.

I'm getting a message in SkillSoft that says "Session has Expired" when I try to start a course. What's wrong?

Every so often the temporary Internet files that are stored on your computer become corrupted. This can cause several problems when you try to access the Internet, including the 'Session Expired' message.

To fix this problem in Internet Explorer, you can remove these temporary files (which you do not need) by choosing:

  1. Select Internet options from the Tools menu in Internet Explorer.
  2. On the General tab, click on the button labeled Settings and then click on View Files.
  3. Next click on the Edit menu and choose Select All.
  4. Press the Delete key on your keyboard, and answer Yes when asked if you want to delete the files.
  5. Close the window and choose OK.
  6. Back in the General tab click on the Delete Files button.
  7. Select the checkbox to Delete all Offline content and click on OK.
  8. Click on the Delete Cookies button and delete them.
  9. Restart your computer and try accessing a course again.

My SkillSoft courses will not load. What do I do?

When you try to start a course, you may see a message that states "Login in progress... If this message remains for more than 40 seconds, please click here for further instructions". You will need to click on the click here and follow instructions. You may have to run a system compatibility test to configure your computer.

Pop-up Blocker

Do I have to turn off the Pop-up Blocker on my computer?

Yes. Pop-ups are windows that open on their own when you visit a web site. We require pop-ups to be enabled (that is, your Pop-up blocker must be turned off) because our courses run in a Pop-up window.

How do I use a Pop-up Blocker?

You may have a pop-up blocker installed of your computer. Pop-up blockers can block annoying windows that open on their own when you visit a web site, but they can also block useful windows, such as the ones we use to play our online courses.

Many web browsers (e.g. Internet Explorer, Netscape) have built-in pop-up blockers. You must turn them off from within the browser. You can also purchase separate pop-up blocker software. You must use the manufacturer's software to turn off/on pop-up blocking for these programs.

Some pop-up blockers permit you to allow pop-ups from a particular web site. This allows you to permit helpful pop-ups from web sites such as ours, but prevents them from other web sites.

The SkillSoft Browser Test can also determine if you have a pop-up blocker running. To use this tool go to: http://browser.skillport.com/bh/default.asp.

Turn off pop-up blocker in Internet Explorer:

  1. From within Internet Explorer, choose Tools, Pop-up Blocker.
  2. Turn off Pop-up Blocker.

Turn off pop-up blocker in Netscape

  1. From within Netscape choose Tools, Security Center.
  2. Click on Pop-up Blocking and disable the blocker.

Screen Resolution

What is Screen Resolution?

The screen resolution of your monitor (display) signifies the number of dots (pixels) on the entire screen. Resolution refers to the sharpness and clarity of an image.

Why can’t I see everything on the screen (e.g. text, buttons) without scrolling right to left and top to bottom?

The screen resolution determines the virtual size of your computer screen. Improper settings can distort images and limit your view of the content. To change your screen resolution:

  1. Right-click on your desktop and click on Properties.
  2. Select the Settings tab on the Display Properties dialogue box (see below for example). Look at the Screen Resolution. Move the slider until the screen area is set to an acceptable viewing area for you. This setting should be at least 1024 by 768 pixels.
  3. Click on the OK button.
