Acrobat Reader

It is a piece of software which allows a computer to display PDF files. PDF is a file format that is used to electronically reproduce printed material. The Acrobat Reader is available for free from http://www.adobe.com/

Cookies

A cookie is a bit of data that is stored on a computer to save some information. A web server uses the cookie to make your experience at a web site more enjoyable (by remembering your user name, favorite settings, etc.).

CPU - Central Processing Unit

This is the "brains" of your computer. It controls how much data processing you can do.

Internet Connection

A computer that is connected to other computers (the internet) via modem (examples: telephone (dial up), cable, DSL)

Dial up Internet connections requires a modem that dials an access number provided by your local ISP (internet service provider). Dial up Internet is slower than other forms, and is not dedicated, meaning it is not “always on” you must dial the service provider every time you want to connect to the Internet.

Cable Internet connections (i.e. Road Runner, DSL, T1 or T3 line) give fast access to the Internet. With this type of service, pages load faster, videos download faster, and the Internet experience is greatly improved.

Operating System

It is the most important program that runs your computer. All computers must have a operating system and the purpose is to run other programs. The operating system performs tasks such as keeping track of files and directories on file storage devices, helping to recognize keyboards, display screens, storage devices and printers. The operating system usually comes with the purchase of a computer. Some examples of operating systems are Windows 98, Windows 2000, Windows XP, Macintosh, etc.

Pop-up Blocker

Software or application that disables any pop-up advertisement window that you would see while using web browser.

RAM - Random Access Memory

It is a type of computer memory that can be accessed randomly, it also determines what types of programs you can run.

Screen Resolution

Refers to the sharpness and clarity of an image on your monitor (display). It signifies the number of dots (pixels) on the entire screen. It is also used to describe printers and bit-mapped graphic images.

Web Browser

Browser, short for Web browser, is a software program used to locate and display web pages. The most popular browsers are Microsoft Internet Explorer and FireFox.
