Spanish/English Phrases

The ability to use Spanish/English phrases is important for serving Spanish-speaking customers and working with fellow employees. These phrases were compiled from the Partnership's Introduction to Spanish course.

Spanish English Comments
¡Hola! Hello, hi Familiar, informal greeting.
Hola, ala, jalo, bueno, diga Hello (on the telephone) The choice of telephone greeting varies with location.
¡Bienvenido! (male) Or
¡Bienvenida! (female)
Welcome! These forms are in singular by gender male or female and by the of those being greeted.
¡Bienvenido, entre por favor! Welcome, come in please!

Welcoming somebody into your house. Please note the “por favor,” which means “please” in Spanish.

¡Buenos días! Good day, good morning

In some areas, you would say ¡buen día! instead.

¡Muy bien, gracias! ¿Y usted? Very well, thank you and you? Commonly used greeting

¿Cómo te va? ¿Qué tal? ¿Qué hay? ¿Qué pasa?

How's it going? What's happening? Used in a familiar way by youth and some adults.
¿Qué onda? How is it going? What's happening? Commonly used in Mexico.
¿Cómo te llamas? ¿Cómo se llama usted? What's your name? "Literally, "What do you call yourself?" or, more informally, "What are you called?"
Me llamo María. Or María ¿Y su nombre es? My name is Maria and your name is? "Literally, "I call myself Maria" or, more informally, "I am called Maria."
¡Mucho gusto de conocerle (a)! It's a pleasure to meet you. Literally "much pleasure"" and "delighted.""
¡Buenas tardes! Good afternoon, Good evening (twilight) Properly used in the early evening instead of buenas noches.
¡Buenas noches! Good night! Buenas noches can be used as a greeting as well as a farewell at night.
¡Adiós! Goodbye! An Informal saying is “chau/o”, regional, from Italian ciao

Es hora de tomar su medicina. It's time for your meds
¿Dónde le (te) duele? Where does it hurt?
¡No esconda su medicina! Don't cheak (hide) your medicine
Estamos para ayudarlo We're here to help you
El grupo va a empezar. Group is starting
Es hora de desayuno. It's time for breakfast
Es hora de merienda. It's time for snacks
Es hora de almuerzo. It's time for lunch
Es hora de cenar. It's time for dinner
Es hora de ver televisión. It's t.v. time
¡Por favor, preste atención! Please pay attention
Tiene visita You have a visitor
¿Quieres leer? Do you want to read?
¡Por favor, arregle su cama! Please make your bed
