Labor-Management Committee Development

Committee Co-Chair Leadership Skills – 1 Day

For labor and management co-chairs only, this course explores the responsibilities of committee leadership to build an effective team, jointly determine an appropriate agenda, facilitate meetings, and implement committee decisions. Co-Chairs will be able to:

  • Plan an effective meeting agenda
  • Guide pre-meeting research
  • Use a variety of team-building skills
  • Evaluate team effectiveness and implement corrective action as needed

Labor-Management Committee Basics – 1 Day

This course is designed for individual members of labor-management committees and provides participants with a working knowledge of the principles and practices of effective committees and an understanding of how to establish and maintain effective labor-management relationships. Participants will be able to:

  • Understand the role of labor-management committees in the larger labor-management context
  • Create a labor-management committee operating agreement
  • Use an effective process for agenda development, pre-meeting preparation, conduct of meetings, and follow-up steps
  • Learn an effective problem-solving technique

The Labor-Management Committee Process – 2 Days

This course is designed for entire labor-management committees and provides participants with a working knowledge of the principles and practices of effective committees and an understanding of how to establish and maintain effective labor-management relationships. Committee members will be able to:

  • Understand the role of labor-management committees in the larger labor-management context
  • Initiate a labor-management committee operating agreement
  • Use an effective process for: agenda development and pre-meeting preparation, conduct of a meeting, and meeting follow-up
  • Practice effective problem solving techniques
  • Participate in an actual “coached” labor-management committee meeting [Return Index]

Note: This course differs from the one-day course for individual members of committees in that participants work on developing their relationships, consider real issues confronted by their committees, and conduct an actual labor-management committee meeting.

The Labor-Management Committee’s Role in Education and Training – 3 Hours

Labor-management committee members learn how to assess their education and training needs; request and utilize appropriate resources; recruit, select, and register participants; and assist in post-learning follow-up and evaluation. All Partnership programs and services, how to access them, and how to advise employees about them are explained in this course. Participants will be able to:

  • Conduct a local worksite needs assessment
  • Identify and access appropriate Partnership programs and services
  • Market programs and recruit and select appropriate participants
